Tourism hotspot survey 2024
Project description
Tourism is an important economic factor for Berlin and the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region, a driver of culture and part of the capital's identity. After steady growth in the number of guests and overnight stays from the mid-2000s to 2019, the influx of tourists stopped. The coronavirus pandemic of 2020/2021 caused far-reaching social disruption, which also had a massive impact on the catering and hotel industry and cultural businesses. Now that the pandemic has been overcome, tourism in Berlin is growing again, but has not yet reached the level it was at before the coronavirus pandemic.
The tourist hotspot survey initiated by visitBerlin in 2019 showed that over 70 per cent of those surveyed at the hotspots were Berliners. All three aspects taken together - recovery of tourism, population growth and the importance of locals for the use of hotspots - make it clear that after the coronavirus pandemic and for the coming years, we can expect the intensive use of public spaces by people seeking recreation and entertainment to continue.
However, current, very small-scale data on the composition of visitors at individual points of interest (POI) is not available. For this reason, Wissensbasierte Planung, together with Urban Catalyst GmbH, is conducting a survey of users and their composition at several hotspots on behalf of visitBerlin in order to provide additional data to underpin and objectify the political and media discussion at city, district and neighbourhood level.
Within the scope of the project I take over services in the following areas
- Conception (definition of the research question, GIS-supported identification of the survey areas, question development etc.)
- Organization and monitoring of the field phase, incl. app-supported survey
- Evaluation and visualization of the acquired data
- Project Management
