Package boxes in Munich – transport impacts and network design

Package boxes bundle shipments and can reduce unsuccessful delivery attempts at the doorstep. At the same time, they create pickup routes and land use requirements within the city area. Therefore, a study is being conducted in Munich to examine under what spatial and operational conditions an open provider-owned package box network can contribute to traffic relief.

Knowledge-based planning is being carried out on behalf of the project by LNC LogisticNetwork Consultants. Technical literature and municipal structural data are combined with spatial analyses and a model-based potential assessment. Different scenarios represent possible changes in driving performance and emissions.

Another focus is on suitable site types and the density of the network. The study considers both the walking accessibility and the need for package boxes for the expected volume of shipments. From this, criteria for spatial coverage and the required capacity are derived. Model-based comparisons show under what conditions the additional benefits of additional stations change.

The evaluation concept sets out which metrics and data are needed to monitor usage and the traffic impacts in the future. The results are intended to provide the state capital of Munich with a professional basis for further developing the package box network and managing public spaces.
