Rail Coach and Rail Freight Study Berlin
For the State of Berlin, a rail freight study and the work of a regional rail coach are being combined in a joint project. The aim is to evaluate infrastructure, transport flows and shift potentials on a data- and location-specific basis and to derive concrete courses of action for administration and practice from this. Wissensbasierte Planung is responsible for the market and potential analysis and contributes to the overall strategic evaluation.

What this project is about
As an economic hub and growing metropolis, Berlin relies on reliable freight transport. At the same time, space is scarce, the road network is heavily congested and the demands for climate-friendly logistics are increasing. The project therefore investigates the infrastructural, operational and spatial conditions under which more freight transport can be shifted to the railways.
The rail freight transport study records the existing infrastructure in the state of Berlin and in the urban-suburban context. It looks at bottlenecks, traffic flows, terminals and rail connections, as well as industrial locations close to rail. Building on this, market and modal shift potentials are investigated and various development scenarios are drawn up. The Regional Rail Coach takes up the findings from the study, approaches companies and other stakeholders, and supports concrete modal shift approaches.
Knowledge-based planning (KBP) is primarily responsible for market and potential analysis. To this end, transport, corporate, site and infrastructure data are brought together, spatially evaluated and classified from a technical perspective. The focus is on transport-intensive companies, suitable commercial sites and relations where a modal shift from road to rail can be realistically assessed. In addition, KBP contributes to project management, the assessment of future infrastructure requirements and the final recommendations for action.
The project is being carried out by a working group consisting of the Studiengesellschaft für den Kombinierten Verkehr e. V. (SGKV), Wissensbasierte Planung and LUB Consulting GmbH. The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML is working as a subcontractor to SGKV. The results are intended to provide the State of Berlin with a technically sound basis for prioritising infrastructure needs, specifically targeting companies and preparing further steps for the shift of freight transport to the rail network.
