Large-volume and heavy transport in Berlin - basic design for a target network

Project description

Large and heavy goods transports (GST) are an indispensable part of urban developments and functioning economies. For many companies, GST are an integral part of corporate value creation. The goods that require GST are mostly transported by road. For example, the goods supply construction sites with tools and materials. They can be globally demanded industrial products or part(s) of sustainable energy supply.

In Berlin, several thousand notices for GST were issued on an annual average in recent years by the licensing authority, the Senate Department for the Environment, Mobility, Consumer and Climate Protection (SenUMVK). Today, various infrastructural restrictions exist for GST in the transport network and make effective, city-compatible routing difficult.

The Senate Department for the Environment, Mobility, Consumer and Climate Protection (hereinafter client, AG) therefore now wants to develop a strategic target network that takes into account sources and targets (sinks) of GST. This should facilitate approval processes for all stakeholders and secure and enable necessary infrastructures for GST in the German capital in the long term.

In an essential step towards a GST target network, the WG wants to have the necessary basics drawn up. First of all, sources and sinks of GST are to be identified and georeferenced in a demand map. Necessary attributes are to supplement the inventory and create a basis for further characterisation. In addition, the basic work should show how a target network can be developed from the information to be collected and what hurdles and limits exist due to the current data situation.

In close coordination with the client, I develop the above-mentioned project contents. For this purpose, I conduct interviews and workshops, collect data, process them in a geographic information system (QGIS), visualise them and compile them in an updatable database.
